• 1954 born in Kosciusko, Mississippi, United States, to a maid and a coal miner
• 1971 wins an oratory contest and becomes a student at Tennessee State University
• 1976 works at WJZ-TV in Baltimore, Maryland, United States, as a news anchor and later as host of a morning show
• 1985 appears in the film The Color Purple
• 1986 begins hosting her own talk show, which becomes extremely popular and profitable (it runs for 25 years)
• 1989 becomes a millionaire
• 1996 launches her book club
• 2000 becomes a billionaire
• 2000 launches the magazine O, The Oprah Magazine
• 2005 recognized as the most generous African American philanthropist
